Student Story: Sarah at PPSC

Sarah is a white woman with brown hair. She wears a grey shirt with rainbows. Her hair is braided into 2 braids on either side of her head and her bangs cover her forehead.

Meet Sarah Morrissey, one of the first students to enroll in ASPIRE Scholars at Pikes Peak State College (PPSC)! Although she attended PPSC out of high school, she faced many challenges and recognized that she would need additional help. ASPIRE Scholars gave her the opportunity to try again with more support. Sarah says ASPIRE is "really helpful," sharing how staff guidance and modifications allow her to fully participate in her courses and demonstrate her knowledge effectively "I know the stuff, and I don't have to struggle...I am excited that I am able to do it and get help."

Sarah wanted to go college because she enjoys learning. She is studying History, which she hopes to use in a career as a museum archivist. This semester, Sarah's classes include a Communications course and a Psychology course, both of which are helping her develop vital soft skills and empowering her to be an independent thinker. Sarah shares that she is learning to "avoid Group Think" and "come up with new things."

In addition to her studies, Sarah emphasizes, "the making friends part of it is kind of fun, too!" Sarah has also become more independent, adding, "I know my mom is thankful for [ASPIRE] so that I don't have to rely on her so much, and that's really nice!" Examples of Sarah's growing independence are that she takes the public bus to campus, and she is becoming a stronger self advocate everyday. Her self-advocacy has evolved to include not only communicating when she can do things on her own but also asking for help when needed, which she admits is a continuous challenge.

As Sarah reflects on all the growth she has experienced during her first year in ASPIRE, she encourages other students to pursue their college goals and to not give up. "It's worth it! If you want to go to college, you should try it." Sarah's experience in inclusive higher education is a reminder that, when given the right supports, students with intellectual disability can truly thrive in college!
