Senior Story: Sophia is graduating from Regis!

Sophia wears a white soccer jersey and smiles.

Meet Sophia, a Regis student about to graduate with her Career Path Certificate in Communications & Advocacy. She hopes to use this certificate by eventually getting a job at GLOBAL Down Syndrome Foundation, but first, she will stay at Regis for a 5th year! She plans to study Health Science & Exercise Science through one of Regis's traditional college pathways. Sophia is proof that, with perseverance and dedication, anything is possible!

In college, Sophia "learned so much from different classes, not just one class!" She loved working with different peer mentors each semester to help her be more engaged in her academics and around campus. They inspired her to want to be a peer mentor for GLOBAL students next year while she is enrolled in her Health Science pathway. Sophia's time in the GLOBAL Inclusive Program taught her to advocate for herself and be an activist for the disability community. We know Sophia will continue to have a prominent voice, and we are excited to see her advocacy skills in the future!

Sophia's Experience

  • School: Regis
  • Major: Communications and Advocacy
  • Favorite Part of College: My favorite part of GLOBAL is helping me to be more independent
  • Jobs on Campus: I was a manager for the Regis women's soccer team, I was a mentor for IN!, I worked with Solace Healthcare, and I worked at Centennial Elementary School
  • Plans After Graduation: I’m getting a job at a health care office and doing a fifth year at Regis (not at GLOBAL Inclusive Program)

Sophia's Words of Wisdom

  • What has the opportunity to go to college meant for you?: I’m so grateful for these schools to have higher education programs and to give a chance not just only for myself it’s also for others like me.
  • What did you learn about yourself during college?: I learned that people with Down syndrome learn differently and that I can advocate myself!
  • What advice do you have for incoming freshmen?: Advocate for yourself! Be noticeable, friendly, and make friends. Just be yourself and work towards your goals!
